What is a 1.5? Where an immigrant generation fits in → multiamerican.scpr.org

of-praxis:

The experience of 1.5 generation immigrants, a term used to describe people who arrived in the U.S. as children and adolescents, is a unique one. Unlike their first-generation parents or U.S.-born siblings, their identity is split. They are American in many ways, sometimes in most, but not entirely.

Depending on how old 1.5s are upon arrival, where they grow up, which ethnic group they belong to and a host of other factors, their American/immigrant identities vary wildly, as do the roles they play within immigrant diasporas. They can play bridge-builder and cultural interpreter, helping parents and grandparents navigate their new home. Or they can feel like outcasts, neither here nor there. Then there are complicating factors like legal status, with some undocumented 1.5s growing up side by side with U.S. citizen siblings and peers.

Undocumented youth in Arizona are ready to face off against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and you are invited to watch the action live on UStream | Dream Actvist → ustream.tv

numol:

from the email they’re sending out about this [please tune in & pass this around if you can]:

For years now Sheriff Joe Arpaio has had full permission to do as he wishes with the undocumented community here in Arizona. And he has been pretty good at doing just that. Twice a month he conducts his version of raids, going into businesses and charging working families with felonies for attempting to put food on the table. He has put a lot of fear in the the community and now it is time for us to fight back.

Today, Rocio (17), Jackie (16), Viridiana (20), Daniela (20), Hugo (23) and Stephanie (18), will be coming out as undocumented and unafraid to demand an end to Arpaio’s career and they want you to watch it.

We’ll be going live at 3:00pm PST / 6pm EST. Be sure to tune in and join the fight against Arpaio’s out there who think they will forever hold our communities down. We need to fight back. We need to show them that, despite the fear, we are ready to confront them and take ownership of they same thing they think they can use against us, our fear.

Maybe you are not ready to fight back but you should definitely support those who are.

The youth coming out, if arrested, would be handed over to Sheriff Arpaio. At his jail they could be placed into deportation proceedings, but it is a risk they are willing to take. Will you support them?

Much love,

Mohammad

"As much as I love America, I'm not able to give back because of the fact that I'm undocumented," Martinez said.

“As a Conservative organization, we believe the DREAM Act does not grant young people any entitlements, but rather an earned legalization through hard work, discipline, and dedication to our Great Nation. It would give a group of people who speak English well and who have completed high school, a chance to join our Armed Forces or pursue higher learning. Joining the military as a prerequisite for earned legalization is an intimate and fulfilling experience with regard to developing a strong American identity and love for our country. Higher education is another prerequisite for the Dream Act, and conservatives should promote this kind of legislation because higher education would allow this group to support themselves in the labor market.”
